HERstory 5

I remember 1981 very well. I was a senior in high school who found herself pregnant. The school at that time did not allow pregnant minors to attend school for I would send the wrong message. So I was shipped to a pregnant minor school. I had to walk to every teacher and get their signature that I was withdrawing and everyone of them said something lame.."good luck", " hope you finish high school" .... you get the picture.

anyway... when I got to the PMS I was surrounded by young girls who were either pregnant or just had their babies... some did not graduate and I was determined to walk with my class so I did... I graduated only 5 months pregnant will the little ham...and I walked with my class...

I guess if you put a challenge in front of me.... I will overcome it. Maybe and not always with grace but definitely that "intestinal fortitude" Ernie is always talking about.
I was born with it ... my grandmother is the same way.. and of course mamacita... don't ever tell her she can't do it... by the way.... my grandbabies are the new wave and watch out world... they have what it takes!

This story is partially why I have thought about getting into teaching. Just think if one of those teachers had hugged you and said, "It'll be OK, I know you are going to make it!" you would have always remembered that. I mean, it wouldn't have made a difference because you made it anyhow, but you would have remembered the kindness.

I think I would have loved that... I had support at home, but in that stage in my life, I felt judged and they felt that was it for me...

a teacher can make a big difference..
